Trust the Process

Amanda Kiesling

Where does meaning come from within an artwork? We derive meaning through directly

engaging with the work, which taps into the unique experiences we carry within ourselves. Trust

the Process is a peek into my automatic artmaking, revealing how complex, abstract works can

be born from layers upon layers of senseless scribbles contrasted with meticulous colors.

While these works carry personal significance, viewers bring their own perspectives and

experiences when interacting with art. Per Louise Rosenblatt’s Reader response theory, the

meaning of any work is ultimately subjective. The composition process for these drawings was

automatic, inspired by the expressionist work of Kandinsky. Automatic drawing means to draw

without intent, freely associating feeling with drawing, while embracing mistakes to make the

subconscious tangible.

Throughout Trust the Process, viewers can explore the possibilities of layers, time, and

intuition. Whether it be with our hands, bodies, or minds, meaning can be cultivated in every

interaction we have in this world. If clouds can form animals and shadows can emulate

creatures, then why can’t scribbles become emotionally saturated windows into your own mind?
