Visits To The Void

Jess Gerome

A compost heap is not a glamorous place, yet the decay of organic material is a beautiful process because it represents the elegant balance of nature where change is inevitable. Visits to the Void represents this transient state of impermanence, where old forms decay as new forms emerge. The materials - burlap coffee bags, wheat paste, pine lumber, salvaged book pages - all with previous lives now embodied for a moment in this new form. From a shell of salvaged book pages grows a space for introspection away from sensory distractions. In this way you visit the void, a liminal darkness, transforming the discarded into a generative place within yourself. What arises in your consciousness is the interaction of what you receive from the void and the meaning you give it. Visits to the Void is not complete unless you activate it by your participation. Step inside, sit down and embrace the void. New meanings are generated through your participation. You are invited to share your interaction or let go of something no longer needed by writing a note and leaving it within the organic matter around the structure to be composted.
