Moments in Time

"Moments in Time" encompasses the sense of wonderment that the skies provide me. Each distinct cloud provides both a recognizable structure as well as an ever-changing shape that comes with imagination. Clouds take up whole sections of the landscape as storms come in and provide a backdrop for a range of subtly shifting colors while the sun crosses the horizon.  Clouds also provide a visual place of serenity, as they cross the heavens. This series captures the days and times when the ever-changing skyscape has provided me these moments.

Focusing primarily on the space between objects in nature, "Moments in Time” utilizes the negative space as well as the soft translucent color that watercolor provides. The changing size of the paper works to show how our own perspective of the sky changes, be it through a window of a bedroom, a passenger window of a car, or framed in by the tall downtown buildings. The number of smaller sizes of the canvas works to show the fragments of time and place that can be taken throughout busy days that add up to a greater collection of experience.

"Moments in Time" uses a multitude of simple shapes and tones with abruptly shifting values to capture the ethereal nature of the subject matter. Matte areas and muted shading contrast with subtle shifts to define depth. The tension between continuous detail, as seen in contemporary landscapes and muting of detail, common in abstract compositions reflect the difficulty of human vision to fully observe the grand nature of clouds.  Each brush stroke is an honest reflection of my wonderment and a want to share it with others.
