In Between The Petals

Marlene Armas

In Between the Petals, I use drawing and writing to communicate what I can’t say out loud. In these visual journals, which take the form of roses, the entries hold memories, thoughts, and emotions. I use layers of drawing, writing, and mixed media to position the sketchbook as both an archive and a site of protection, where lived experience is documented without the pressure of perfection or public performance.

Visible marks, erasures, and interruptions are present, emphasizing process. This approach challenges the idea that artwork must be perfect in order to be meaningful. As the petals open one by one, each contains a passage and drawings of moments that I treasure. Themes of vulnerability appear from enclosed spaces. Although the work is based on personal experience, it urges viewers to consider their own forms of hiding, especially during childhood. The rose holds a lot of meaning in my family, the name of my dad’s small hometown, Santa Rosa, Mexico.

Between the Petals affirms the value of creativity as a means of preserving stories and identity. It defies traditional notions of completion and aesthetic value by embracing imperfection as an integral component of the work. It validates the expression and acknowledges creativity as a means of keeping oneself present, honest, and connected.
