Take Up Space

Mary Sullivan

Take Up Space is a visual testament that transcends the confines of traditional skate photography. It delves into the complexities of identity, resilience, and empowerment within the skateboarding community, shedding light on individuals often overlooked or dismissed. The project documents the resilience and spirit of those who, like me, have been marginalized within the skateboarding community. By documenting women, trans, non-binary, and queer skateboarders in Colorado, these photographs amplify and celebrate the rich diversity within our subculture.

As the last true rebellion of skateboarding, we are here to take up space and push the boundaries of what's possible in skateboarding. Through photography and skateboarding, I have found the courage to be unapologetically myself and claim my space in a world that often tries to diminish my presence. With every skate session and every photograph, I reaffirm both my peers' and my own right to exist and thrive, not only in skateboarding, but in the world.

Through my work, I strive to inspire others to do the sameā€”to embrace their uniqueness, defy expectations, and, in a world that too often tries to dictate who belongs and who doesn't...

Don't be afraid to TAKE UP SPACE.
