Unbridled

Julian Edwards

Unbridled is a two-part work that combines a poster series featuring my horse, Sierra, with a branded box design centered around the PZP fertility control shot, a key tool used in wild horse population management. This piece reflects on the contested practice of wild horse roundups, an issue entangled in ethical, ecological, and political debates. While often defended as necessary for land and population control, roundups have been criticized for their inhumane methods and their disruption of natural herd dynamics.

Through the personal image of Sierra, Unbridled grounds the discussion in individual identity and presence, showing viewers that behind policy and statistics are living beings with agency. The accompanying PZP-inspired box design brings attention to the human systems of control imposed on wild horses, connecting branding and consumer culture to the broader questions of regulation, ownership, and intervention.

By merging personal narrative with communication design, Unbridled challenges anthropocentric assumptions that frame nature primarily as a resource for human use. It asks viewers to reconsider the dominant narratives of “management” and to imagine more ethical and sustainable relationships between humans and the wild.
